The Coronation Chair: A 700-Year-Old Throne
At the heart of the Abbey sits one of the most precious and famous pieces of furniture in the world: the Coronation Chair. Commissioned by King Edward I in 1296, this ancient oak chair was built to house the Stone of Scone, a sacred symbol of Scotland's monarchy. Since 1308, it has been the centrepiece of the coronation of every English and British monarch, witnessing over 700 years of history.
The chair, now fragile and bearing the marks of centuries—including graffiti from 18th-century schoolboys—is the oldest piece of furniture in the country still used for its original purpose. When you stand before it, you are looking at the very seat where 39 monarchs, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, were crowned, connecting you directly to the heart of Britain's royal heritage.
